Oh and tamsin, on another note. If your partner did get his own car he could advertise his services on places like freeindex.co.uk and on google maps, trip advisor etc. I used to get quite a few airport jobs that way. Ideally you want to source as much of your own work as possible.

Hi Tamsin, i dont drive a cab anymore but the 'settle fee' for a car in Liverpool last year was around £260 pw. 40% Sounds awful but had i used a settle car it would have taken 50% of my wages. Depending on what your chap earns it may be in his interest to move to a fixed rate. The thing about working on percentages is the harder you work the more you have to pay.

I bought my own [new] car on hire purchase but that was only about £30 cheaper a week to run, not worth if for the burden of debt imo! It may be worth him looking into taking a loan for a cheap used car. Its the best way to minimise running costs.

In any case, shop around operators, dont feel like you have to stick with one.

My fella has been a taxi driver for 6 months and is in no position to buy his own car, so he has to rent, one but his employer is taking 40% of his wages each week,plus £5 operator charges each week and he has to put his fuel in! We know he's being taken for a ride (excuse the pun)by greedy, selfish people, but if there is anyone left in this world whos honest and kind enough to help us out with an average rental charge for a car or any info that could help us novices out, it will be greatly appreciated and would help to restore my faith in mankind.
