I'm a Liverpool private hire driver. Earnings tend to be pretty similar with Liverpool firms. £18-80 is my my hourly average for 2011-2012. From that, one can work out what you want/need to earn. Obviously the more you put in the more one benefits. I work 35 hours per week, owner driver, and have the normal running cost of a car (which every car owner does irrespective of job description). Some cab drivers live on council estates and struggle to pay their rent, whilst others live in large suburban areas and enjoy life. (There are all those in between too!). My point being.., it's an individuals choice on how long they work, how they like to spend it or even where one chooses to live.

I think that it all depends on the term for financial gain. If you are making a profit from collecting and transporting someone you will need to be council approved? best to clear it with your local authority, as they do vary and dont forget to check your insurance cover? you may need to up your liability cover?

anyone help, councils are a bit negative. I am retired. Want to drive an SEN pupil to school and back. In a car with a private hire badge on it. I have CRB, first aid, and medical etc. Do i need a taxi drivers badge? This would be the only part time job i do. i collect no fare. reason i ask is someone else says i need one, someone else says i don't. council shifty.

Merce, have you considered takeaway food delivery.. I've been working for a local indian for a year or so now. i'm doing 4 x 3hr shifts a week and that gets you about £250 cash- its enough to live on if you haven't got many outgoings, plus your only doing 12hrs a week..

Hi Merce, you get out of life what you put in it. Ive have been a London green badge since 1998 and have never looked back. I choose to work 6 days a week. Three days earn average £120/£180 and three nights average £250/300 a night. Like those who have been in the game a long time eventually you will know where to rank up etc. Yes baby steps but it will only happen if you make it happen wherever the district you live in. Green or Yellow Badge. Good luck.

ive been a london black cabbie since 1998 and aint looked back. Work 3 day a week 3 nights. £120 - £150 a day. £200 - £300 a night. Considered being a Yellow badged and am glad I stuck it out to become a Green. Anyone out there go for it now matter how old you are. And we have the Olympics coming up.

Hi Merce, its business is different from district to district,in the same city private hire vs hackney, even driver to driver at the same firm. I would advise you to keep working at halfords and rent a settle car or hire some time on a black cab. Its not a good time to go investing in new cars or anything like that. You want to minimise your financial outlay, just incase you dont like the job or there is no money where you are. Baby steps! Best of luck ;-)

I hear mixed things from taxi drivers. I think one mans idea of a bad wage is another mans fortune. I currently work at Halfords... £6 an hour. Which I enjoyed until the company reduced my hours from full time to 15 a week. I really enjoy driving and I've worked in a bar so I'm confident I can deal with the arseholes. So I think I'll go for my badge and see how it goes...

If I can take home £200 a week that would do me fine... Some people wouldn't get out of bed for that.

I work as a ph taxi driver in belfast. Costs per week are 27 insurance, 121 depot rent, 139 car payment (rent to own) for 2 years and average fuel is 200. If I worked 100 hours a week I would earn 500 per week after costs mentioned. Taxiing is rubbish money in belfast. Sooner I get back to being an electrician the better. 40 hours for 40k. Damn the recession. Btw if u earn 55k for 50 hours I'm moving to your town.....but sounds like bs to me.

I work in belfast with a private hire cab. I work 100 hours a week and generally have no life. Those hours gets me 500 to 600 a week cash. I pay no tax as I declare 5k a year as if u worked a regular 40 hours that is wot u would earn. Depot rent is 121 a week car payment (rent to own scheme) is 139 a week for 2 years insurance is 27 a week fuel is about 200 a week. Its annoying job cause u lift over 1k a week but you pay half of it out. ........btw 55k for 50 hours is bull mate!

Just to give the newbies some idea of wages. I run a black cab in Leeds. I have held a Hackney Badge since 1988 and neither love nor hate the job. However, as far as wages go, I generally put in atleast 50 hours per week and annually my gross income is between £50k - £55k.

That includes holidays of approx 6 weeks per year, so you could say my income is over 46 weeks and not 52. The interesting point is that I left school with 3 A levels and strangely enough many friends who went on to Uni now have jobs where they earn less than I do!! It is all about what you put in which gives you your livlihood.
